Characterful, raw & beautifully imperfect instruments with a touch of fairy dust

A Collection Of Nostalgic Sounds

Dark Fairytale Instruments is an ongoing series of enchanting, characterful VST plugins created by German composer Oskar Schuster from a collection of rare acoustic instruments, gathered over many years.

Music From Dreams & Memories

Oskar Schuster is a German composer and multi-instrumentalist known for his instrumental music inspired by fairy tales, childhood memories, old films, books, and forgotten dreams.

Rather than pursuing technical perfection, he always strives to create something that sounds unique, raw, and soulful.

Many of the instruments used throughout his music are rare or antique, featuring mechanical noises, unpredictable resonances, and small imperfections that become part of the composition and sound itself.

“I've always loved instruments that have something unique about them — a perfect, mint-condition Steinway grand piano often leaves me strangely unmoved, but an old creaky upright with beautiful Art Nouveau ornamentation on its case and a singing, soulful tone, standing somewhere in the corner of a dusty little piano shop in Berlin, will always spark my imagination.”

Antique Instruments & Analog Character

The instruments behind Dark Fairytale Instruments are recorded from Oskar’s personal collection of pianos and rare bell-tone instruments such as celestas and dulcitones, as well as toy instruments and other unusual acoustic sources.

Each instrument is sampled with an emphasis on preserving the organic physical character of the original recordings: mechanical sounds, resonances, soft pedal noises, characterful room reverb, and delicate imperfections are intentionally retained instead of removed.

The result is a series of virtual instruments designed less like polished studio products and more like playable sonic worlds, created to inspire music producers to create a little magic.

Preserving Imperfection

Modern sample libraries often aim for flawless realism and polished consistency. Dark Fairytale Instruments takes the opposite approach.

My instruments are intentionally special and imperfect. They are created for composers searching for those sounds that create emotion, evoke nostalgic atmosphere, and feel personal rather than sterile.

Every creak, resonance, and unstable overtone contributes to the illusion that a real forgotten instrument is sitting directly in front of you.

Dark Fairytale Instruments is an evolving collection, with new instruments continuously being recorded and transformed into expressive virtual instruments for composers, filmmakers, and storytellers.
